Comic Con Portugal kicks off Thursday with over 300 hours of programming

The eighth edition of Comic Con Portugal will take place from Thursday to Sunday at Parque das Nações, in an area that includes the Altice Arena and surrounding spaces, with an area of 115 square meters, to accommodate eight auditoriums and various dedicated spaces to the distribution of entertainment, cinema, television, cosplay, video games or literature content.

Speaking at a press conference today in Lisbon to present the program, Comic Con Portugal director Paulo Cardoso said the current location is "the best of both worlds" as it includes spaces exteriors and interiors, and that this year there will be traffic restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic.

At the end of the presentation, questioned by the Lusa agency, Paulo Cardoso refused to reveal how many tickets have already been sold for Comic Con, noting that the convention is expected to reach the number of visitors of 2019, when 140 entries were recorded. .

This year, among the more than 370 guests are names such as actor Sean McGuire, of the series "Once Upon a Time", actress Dafne Keen and actor Amir Wilson, who star in the series "Mundos Paralelos “, or Zackary Levi, of film” Shazam! », as well as authors Paco Roca, Wes Craig, António Jorge Gonçalves, João Tordo and Paula Hawkins.

At these events, guest artists take part in public showings of their work, usually also available for autograph sessions, photo ops with onlookers, and promotional interviews.

In the presentation, Paulo Cardoso recalled that Comic Con exists to give visibility to "pop culture products" and that this depends on the partnerships that the organization establishes with companies of this "multimillion dollar business".

In this edition of Comic Con, for example, the HBO platform, NOS Audiovisuais, the AMC, AXN, SYFY and Paramount Pictures channels are present.

From national production, we know that there will be presentations and panels dedicated, for example, to the "Santiago" series, from the Opto platform, from SIC, to the film "The Last Animal", by Leonel Vieira, and to the production of the "Codex 362" series for RTP.

Paulo Cardoso stressed that Comic Con is "an incredible experience", but admitted that "Portugal is a difficult country because of the 'box office' [receita de bilheteira] before countries with large audiences".

Asked about the economic impact of Comic Con Portugal, Paulo Cardoso said that a study was carried out during the convention in Oeiras, but the data has not been published and is being updated.

Even so, the director said that Comic Con "has a big representation in retail, in collectibles, in apparel, in intellectual property, it has involvement in content, in theaters and streaming”.

“These are multi-billion dollar industries that always have to feed themselves. But we live with people's experiences. Comic Con is about bringing entertainment to people,” he said.

The complete Comic Con program is available at comic-con-portugal.com.

In the press kit published today, the organization explains that in addition to the general admission ticket, visitors may be required to pay an additional ticket for a signing session or to take a photo with one of the guests. It all depends on the decision of each guest artist.
